Quick WINs: Erica Owens WINs by providing resources and activities for Detroit families, Frugal on the Fly

By Ian Richardson, Managing Partner, Richardson & Richardson Consulting

Podcast Season 1, Episode 23 Guest: Erica Owens, Founder, Frugal on the Fly

Erica Owens is the Founder of Frugal On The Fly, a nonprofit encouraging people to find joy by engaging with their local community through spontaneous adventures and acts of kindness. She empowers people to live their best life on a budget.

Our conversation was awesome and engaging, and focused around the topics of joy, the Michigan Hero Award, and living a frugal lifestyle. As always, I took notes on the conversations, and I have those notes here for your reference and use as you see fit.

  1. Find joy: Erica likes to pivot the services that Frugal on the Fly offers based on the needs of the people in her surrounding communities. Her goal is always to help others find joy through acts of kindness, spontaneous adventures, and new experiences.
  2. Challenge yourself: Erica has helped with charity food drives in the past, but shortly after the pandemic her son wanted to do more. She decided to sign up to pass out 25 boxes of 32 pounds of fresh produce. Before she knew it, she passed out over one million pounds of fresh produce to families
  3. Living frugal is a lifestyle: Erica created a Joy Journey with 52 free or cheap things to do around town, like checking out a new park, sending a handwritten thank you note, or attending the fire engine morning check. There are plenty of ways to find, create, and give joy in your neighborhood without spending a lot of money.

I gain so much value from meeting with fellow entrepreneurs and leaders. Each and every person I speak with brings their own experiences, knowledge, and viewpoints to the table, and without fail, I walk away with a head full of ideas and motivation to do better in my own business. I so greatly appreciate Erica’s willingness to come onto W.I.N. and share her story.
